    =============================================

    The sudden death of George Parrott, one of the county's oldest settlers; occurred at his home west of town last Friday morning. He arose and did his chores as usual, then ate a hearty breakfast. A few minutes after he was seized with pains about the heart and stomach, and died in less than a half hour--before the physician summoned by phone could reach his side. An inquest by Coroner Moss found the cause of death as stated. For many years he had suffered from heart trouble, and a sunstroke received during the war, as well as an injury from a flying shell, have long bothered him. Mr. Parrott was born in Ross county, Ohio, his age at death being seventy-nine years and seven days. He learned the carpenter trade early in life and followed it for many years. He tried to enter the Mexican War, but too many had already volunteered. He then formed one of a party of seven young men to make an exploring trip to New Mexico. They had numerous encounters with Indians. Mr. Parrott finally coming back east and settling in this county in 1854. He was a noted hunter, and claimed the distinction of having killed more deer than any other man in the county. As a member of Co. B, 87th Ind. Inf. he served through the Civil War. In 1849 he was married to Susan Emery, and they had seven children, five of whom are yet living. Three sons live in this county--John, William and Charles. One daughter, Mrs. Jane Boyles lives in Peoria, Ill., and another, Mrs. Kate Stevenson in St. Louis. The two ladies with the latter's two children were here for the funeral, which was held at the M. E. Church Sunday afternoon with services by Rev. T. F. Drake. The G. A. R. attended in a body, accompanying the remains to the final resting place on the hill.

    ===========================================

    Mrs. Susan Parrott, widow of George Parrott, died Saturday morning at her home two and one-half miles west of town. Death came quite suddenly, a stroke of apoplexy bringing a quick end while she was eating breakfast. She had not been well for a week or so, and was taking the morning meal propped up in bed. She would have been eighty years of age the coming March. She was born near Marion, Ohio, coming to this county with her husband about fifty years ago and settling on the place west of town which has since been her home, and in which community she has long been held in high esteem. Since the death of Mr. Parrott a few years ago her daughter, Mrs. Jane Boyles, has lived with her. One daughter and three sons survive her--Mrs. Kate Stephenson of St. Louis and sons John, William and Charles of this county. All of the children were here for the funeral Monday, as was also her brother, James Emery of Marion, Ohio. Services were conducted at the M. E. Church by Rev. A. S. Warriner and interment given on the hill.
